How Do I Set the Pressure on a House Water Pump?

House water pumps help pull water from the well or municipal water supply into the home water pipes. Especially in areas with low water pressure, the pump ensures some water reaches faucets and spouts on higher levels of the home. If the pressure is still too low or water does not reach all faucets, you can adjust the pump pressure.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the water pressure tank near the main water line. Locate the water pump adjacent from the tank.

    • 2

Turn off or unplug the pump. Pop the plastic cap off of the water pump housing. You will see two threaded posts each with a plastic nut on them.

    • 3

Turn the nut on the taller post clockwise to increase the water pressure. Turn the nut on the taller post counterclockwise to decrease the water pressure. A full turn increases or decreases the pressure by about 2 pounds. Some pumps have a gauge to show how many pounds of pressure is set.

Set the pressure on the tank -- if using an air bladder style tank -- to 2 pounds of pressure lower than the pump pressure. For example if you set the pump pressure to 44 pounds, the air bladder tank should be 42 pounds.
