How to Repair Binding in Kohler Faucets

New kitchen faucets that swivel often seem to bind when you first install them. The Kohler line of faucets is no different. Repairing binding in Kohler faucets requires some disassembly of the faucet. The binding is a result of the rubber O-rings between the inside of the spout and the spout stem. New or dry O-rings have a tendency to “stick” to the inside of the faucet, making it difficult to swivel the spout. It is necessary to have your owner's manual handy since the spout disassembly varies depending upon the model Kohler you own.

Instructions

    • 1

Go under the sink and turn the shut-off valve handles clockwise to stop the water flow to the Kohler faucet. There are two shut-off valves for the faucet.

    • 2

Turn on the faucet to allow any remaining water in the line to drain. Turn the water faucet off once no more water is draining.

    • 3

Remove the spout from the base of the faucet. Spout removal varies depending on the model Kohler faucet you own. Refer to your owner's manual for specifics on your faucet.

    • 4

Check the O-rings around the spout stem. The spout stem is what the spout fits over on the faucet base. The O-rings should have no cracks or twists. If the O-rings show signs of damage, pull them off and replace with new O-rings.

    • 5

Apply a thin film of petroleum jelly to the outside of the O-rings with your fingers. This helps prevent the rubber from binding against the inside of the spout.

    • 6

Reinstall the spout onto the faucet in the reverse order you took it apart. Turn on the water supply at the valves under the sink.
