How to Remove Rust From Galvanized Outdoor Pipes

Rust forms on metal when it is exposed to water and oxygen. This is particularly true of galvanized metal, which was frequently used in older homes. If you have galvanized pipe outside, you may see rust forming on taps or other pipes, especially if they are used for a water supply. Prevent rust by using a rust inhibitor and clean off any rust as soon as you see it to prevent it from spreading.

Instructions

    • 1

Fit a circular brass wire brush head into a cordless drill.

    • 2

Turn on the drill and brush the rust off of the pipe using the stiff wire bristles. Wear goggles as you work to protect your eyes from any flying rust pieces.

    • 3

Apply a rust inhibitor designed for galvanized metal to the pipe. The application method depends on what type of inhibitor you are using. Some are available in spray cans and others are applied using a disposable paintbrush. For spray cans, shake the can and spray the inhibitor onto a clean pipe. Hold the can 1 foot from the surface.
