How to Reduce Noise From a Sump Pump

Sump pumps equipped with check valves can sometimes become noisy. Check valves ensure water pumped out of the sump pit does not flow back into the pit. For pumps that drain into sewage lines, the valve ensures sewage does not run into the pit. Noises such as gurgling, vibrating, bubbling or knocking can occur. The noises commonly occur in the discharge pipe and can be muffled as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the pipes going in and out of the sump pump as well as the diameter of the pipes.

    • 2

Use scissors or a box cutter to cut pieces of foam rubber pump insulation to fit the length of the pipes measured in Step 1.

    • 3

Create a slit down the length of each foam insulation piece if it doesn't have a slit already.

    • 4

Slip each piece of foam insulation around the pipes. You may need to cut more pieces to make sure all sections of pipes are covered.

    • 5

Secure the foam insulation with duct tape, wrapping it around tightly in sections to keep the foam from sliding.
