How to Reconnect a Hot Tub

Hot tubs are connected to water supply and drainage or sewer lines. These two connections make outdoor hot tubs vulnerable to freezing over the winter months. In addition, hot tubs should be disconnected from any electrical source, when not in use, to prevent injury or other electrical hazards. Reconnecting your hot tub in preparation for a season of use requires a few basic tools and familiarity with the process.

Things You'll Need

  • New filter

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any covers that may have been installed over your hot tub to protect it from the elements.

    • 2

Inspect every pipe fitting and joint leading to or from your hot tub pump, filter, water supply or drains. Use a large adjustable wrench to completely tighten each fitting. These pipes should have been disconnected as part of the winterization process and will need to be reconnected to ready the hot tub for use.

    • 3

Locate the hot tub's heater unit and find the two heater unions that move cool water in and warm water out. Tighten the heater unions to their respective feeder pipes by grabbing them manually and turning them in a clockwise direction.

    • 4

Open the filter compartment by twisting the plastic cover in a counterclockwise direction until it releases from the locking mechanism. Lift the cover off. Insert a new filter into the compartment then replace the cover.

    • 5

Turn on the water supply cutoff valves that lead to the hot tub's filtration system. Once the valves are open, water will feed into the machine so that all systems may run normally.

    • 6

Plug the hot tub into a three-pronged grounded outdoor outlet. If your hot tub is hardwired into the home circuit, locate the corresponding circuit breaker and flip it on. If your hot tub has a built-in circuit breaker, flip it on as well.

Fill the spa with water then test that each system element is working.
