How to Vent Island Sinks

Kitchen islands give chefs extra food preparation space in kitchens. Use of this space can be maximized if a sink is installed in the kitchen island, but this does require plumbing a vent for a kitchen island. One of the most common ways to do this is by installing a loop underneath the island that carries the sewer gases from the sink drain to the nearest vent stack. Although this project is challenging, a do-it-yourselfer can undertake this project successfully by working with PVC plumbing.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure two DWV tees to the end of a drain run. The first tee is for the drain connection, while the second is for the vent connection. Dry-fit the pieces together, apply PVC primer and allow to dry as appropriate, then glue. Use a hacksaw to trim any pieces if needed and sand down rough edges with sandpaper. Cap the end of the run.

    • 2

Connect the endmost DWV tee to the back of the P trap with a regular tee connection. Dry-fit and glue as needed.

    • 3

Connect a short bit of straight run on top of the P trap connection. The exact height will depend on the height of your island. Leave enough headroom so you can fit two more elbow pieces on the pipe without hitting the underside of the island.

    • 4

Connect another tee to the top of the second DWV connection. Run horizontal pipe from this section to the nearest vent stack.

    • 5

Connect a cleanout straight run on top of the vent tee.

    • 6

Attach another straight run above the cleanout straight so that it is the same height as the straight run above the P trap.

    • 7

Connect the two tops of the stacks inside the kitchen island with 45-degree elbows. Tie the two 45-degree pieces together with a 90-degree bend. Install enough straight pipe between the 45- and 90-degree bends so the pipes fit together snugly.
