How to Put a Catch in a Sink

A sink catch, commonly referred to as a strainer, stops food and other debris from getting into the sink pipes and creating a clog. The strainer connects to the drain below the sink and is held in place with a nut. A removable basket fits inside the face of the strainer. Before installing a catch, you must remove the current assembly.

Instructions

  1. Uninstall Old Assembly

    • 1

Remove items from the sink cabinet so you have room to work. Climb underneath the sink cabinet and unscrew the nut on the top of the P-trap, which as the name suggests resembles a P shape, by hand or with an adjustable wrench if needed. Push the P-trap to the side to have access to the drainpipe.

    • 2

Loosen the nut at the top of the drainpipe underneath the sink by hand or with an adjustable wrench if needed and disengage it from the assembly.

    • 3

Unscrew the current assembly from the sink hole. Loosen the current assembly by hand or with the wrench, then pull it off. Stand above the sink and pry of the top piece of the current assembly with a flathead screwdriver and pull it off.

    Install New Catch

    • 4

Clean the bottom of the sink with a moist rag to remove dirt and grease.

    • 5

Knead a golf-ball-sized amount of plumber's putty with your fingers into a large ring the same size as the sink hole.

    • 6

Push the putty down evenly around the perimeter of the sink hole with your fingers.

    • 7

Insert the strainer into the sink hole, applying even pressure to the top of the strainer as you push it into the putty. Remove excess putty from inside and underneath the sink.

    • 8

Push the gasket around the strainer assembly underneath the sink. Hold the gasket in place by hand.

    • 9

Screw the strainer-tightening nut on the strainer's threads underneath the gasket by hand. Ask an assistant to hold the strainer in place with needle-nose pliers while you tighten the nut underneath the sink with an adjustable wrench.

    • 10

Connect the drain pipe and the P-trap to the bottom of the strainer assembly pipe underneath the sink. Tighten both in position by hand or with a wrench if needed.
