How to Install a Downspout on a Kitchen Sink

In contrast to a faucet spout, which is the piece that allows water to flow through it and into the sink, a downspout is basically the upper section of a kitchen sink's plumbing pipes. This piece connects to the strainer, which sits in the sink's drain hole, and is better known as a tailpiece. Attach it after the strainer is in place within the sink drain. Install this downspout securely to avoid any future leaks when water drains from the sink.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Apply pipe thread compound, which is a paste or putty, to the threads on the bottom of the strainer body underneath the sink. This compound helps seal the joint.

    • 2

Place the slip nut over the top of the tailpiece. This nut is made of either plastic or metal, depending on the material the tailpiece is made of. Place the plastic washer on top of the tailpiece.

    • 3

Connect the top of the tailpiece, or downspout, to the bottom of the strainer body. Twist the slip nut clockwise to hand tighten it. Finish tightening the nut with an adjustable wrench, if necessary, but be sure not to over-tighten it.
