Roller-Ball Bathtub Stopper Removal

A stopper fills a vital role in the operation of your bathtub drain. Without it, the tub fails to prevent water from flowing out through the drain. The roller ball stopper contains a vertical insert beneath the stopper head. This insert “threads” into a strainer just below the surface of the drain. Removing the stopper provides access to the strainer and drain opening for cleaning and other maintenance.
  1. Problems

    • Water flowing into the drain carries hair, soap and other debris past the opened stopper. Over time, some of this waste fails to make it past the strainer, creating a blockage that slows the flow of water. Whether the drain requires plunging or the strainer a bit of cleaning, removing the stopper provides access to the drain opening. Proper removal of your roller-ball stopper depends on the individual design.

    Removal (Set Screw Models)

    • Certain models of roller-ball stopper contain a set screw. This screw secures the stopper to the strainer inside the drain. To access the screw, raise the stopper to the up position. Note the screw on the side of the stopper just beneath the head. If necessary, rotate the stopper to gain better access to the screw. Select an appropriate-size Phillips screwdriver to fit the screw. Loosen the screw, and remove the stopper from the drain.

    Removal (Non Set Screw Models)

    • When working properly, roller-ball models without a set screw twist free of the drain for removal. First, turn the stopper body counterclockwise. If the the stopper fails to come loose, grab the body of the stopper with a pair of pliers. Use a second pair of pliers to loosen the knob on the head of the stopper. Remove the knob, exposing the insert at the center of the stopper. With an appropriate-size Allen wrench or flat head screwdriver, loosen the insert and pull the stopper free of the drain.

    Maintenance

    • The steady flow of water from tub to drain requires a clear path. Removing your roller-ball stopper presents an opportunity to perform basic maintenance. Begin by wiping down the stopper, removing any grime or other buildup. Clean the center insert with either vinegar or a mild detergent. Take a moment to clean the strainer beneath the stopper of any hair or soap scum. Reassemble your stopper, and thread it back into the center of the drain.
