The thread housing comes in two types: male and female. Faucet housing requires one of the two types threads. The faucet housing is easily distinguishable by its appearance. If the faucet has threads on the outside, it requires using a female aerator, which is attached on the outside of the faucet. If the faucet thread isn’t visible on the outside, it requires a male aerator that’s attached to the inside of the faucet’s housing.
In the United States, there are generally two sizes of faucet aerators with the thread inside the assembly: regular and small. The regular and small sizes are different for male and female housing, because of different types of assembly. The small female size is 3/4 inch and the small male is 13/16 inches. The regular female size is 55/64 inch and the regular male size is 15/16 inch. The faucet aerators are available in different flow rates that release water at more or less gallons per minute.
Faucet aerators are readily available in a variety of home improvement, general merchandise and plumbing supply stores. The parts are inexpensive and generally are priced under $5, depending on its construction. The faucet aerators come in a variety of types, colors and finishes to match your faucet.
Faucet aerators install simply by screwing it onto the faucet. The part often is replaced because it releases less water because of hard water buildup on it. If the faucet aerator is coated with hard water buildup or lime scale, simply soak the aerator in white vinegar for 10 to 20 minutes to remove it. To ensure optimal performance, soak the faucet head in white vinegar to remove buildup on the faucet. This can be done by using a small, plastic container filled with white vinegar and placing it under the faucet head until the faucet head is submerged in white vinegar. To avoid holding the plastic container while it’s soaking, use making tape to hold it in place. Attach the masking tape to one side of the plastic container and wrap it over the faucet to the other side of the plastic container close enough so the faucet head is submerged.
