How to Install a Brass Shower Pan Drain Flange

When laying a shower pan, the hole in the base of the pan requires alignment with the drain. A cup-shaped object called a flange joins the pan to the pipe. Installed properly, the flange directs all water from the shower pan into the drain. A strainer atop the flange prevents hair and other solid waste from entering the drain. Installing your brass flange and its various parts correctly ensures leak-free operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten a rag with rubbing alcohol. Wipe around the mouth of the drain opening in the shower pan to remove any debris.

    • 2

Apply a thick bead of plumber's putty around the flange, just below the flange lip.

    • 3

Insert the narrow end of the flange into the drain opening in the shower pan. Push the flange down firmly to compress the bead of plumber's putty and provide a watertight fit.

    • 4

Wipe away excess putty from the top of the flange using your rag.

    • 5

Fit the rubber washer around the underside of the flange where the flange emerges through the shower pan. Your flange includes one rubber and one metal washer.

    • 6

Slide the metal washer onto the underside of the flange. The metal washer fits up against the rubber washer. Hold the washers in place for now to prevent them from falling off.

    • 7

Thread the locking ring included with your flange onto the flange's underside. Tighten the locking ring in place against the two washers. Do not over tighten the locking ring, or you risk damaging the shower pan.

    • 8

Install the shower pan so the drain pipe emerging from the floor penetrates the center of the flange.

    • 9

Fit the rubber gasket down into the top of the flange. Along with this gasket, your flange includes a plastic compression ring and a tool for tightening the ring.

    • 10

Place the compression ring smooth-side down onto the rubber gasket inside the flange.

    • 11

Position the tightening tool across the compression ring.

    • 12

Insert the head of a-flat blade screwdriver into the slot in the middle of the tightening tool. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to tighten the compression ring. When done, remove the tightening tool from the flange.

    • 13

Place the strainer onto the top of the flange and press it into place. If the strainer includes screws, tighten the screws using the flat-head screwdriver or another type and size of screwdriver if necessary.
