How to Install a Lavatory Pivot Ball for Bathroom Sinks

Installing a lavatory pivot ball correctly prevents future problems with raising and lowering the stopper in a bathroom sink that has a pop-up drain. The small, usually white pivot ball sits near one end of a pivot rod, which is the horizontal rod that acts as a lever to raise and lower the stopper. The pivot ball is part of the overall pop-up assembly, and it is the final connection made for the assembly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a pop-up stopper above the sink drain. Position the hole on the bottom of the stopper body so that it faces the rear of the drain.

    • 2

Lower the stopper fully into the drain.

    • 3

Kneel or sit so you can see underneath the sink. Verify that the pop-up assembly's horizontal pivot rod connects securely to the clevis, which is a vertical strap that contains a series of holes. One end of the pivot rod should be inserted through a hole in the clevis, and a spring clip should hold the pivot rod in place. Move the position of the pivot rod, clevis and/or spring clip if necessary.

Shine a flashlight into the hole in the rear of the sink drain to see inside the drain. Slide the end of the pivot rod into the sink drainpipe so that the attached pivot ball and gasket also go into the drainpipe. The end of the pivot rod must engage the hole in the bottom of the stopper body.

    • 5

Turn the pivot rod's retaining nut clockwise, tightening it onto the hole on the back of the sink drainpipe.

    • 6

Stand so you can see the top of the sink. Pull the faucet's lift rod up and down to ensure the pop-up stopper raises and lowers as it should.
