How to Fix an Offset Toilet

If your bathroom's wall is close to your toilet, the toilet may have an offset flange, which permits placement of the toilet away from the wall. An offset flange is angled so that the toilet does not sit directly over the drain stack. If you have noticed a leak underneath your toilet in the basement or you have observed swelling or loosening of your bathroom flooring, you may need to repair your offset toilet to prevent additional damage to your flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply to the toilet and disconnect the supply line with a wrench. Flush the toilet to remove as much water as possible. Place shop towels in the toilet bowl to soak up the remaining water.

    • 2

Remove the flange bolt covers from both sides of the toilet with a flat-edged screwdriver. Remove the locking nuts from the flange bolts with a wrench.

    • 3

Lift the toilet off the flange and turn it over. Scrape any wax from around the toilet drain with a putty knife.

    • 4

Insert a pry bar under the edge of the offset drain flange. Pry the flange off the drain stack.

    • 5

Press the flange gasket into the new offset flange with the tapered side down. Place the brass flange ring over the gasket. Insert one closet bolt through each side of the flange from the bottom -- these bolts secure the toilet to the flange.

    • 6

Insert the offset flange into the drain stack, making sure that the top of the flange offsets away from the adjacent wall. Seat a wax seal ring on the flange with the tapered side down.

    • 7

Replace the toilet over the flange, ensuring that the drain sits inside the wax seal and the closet bolts fit through the slots on the base of the toilet. Place a plastic closet bolt ring and washer over each bolt. Tighten the nuts with a wrench and replace the plastic caps.

Reconnect the water supply line with a wrench. Turn on the water supply and test the toilet to ensure that it is working properly.
