How to Install a Toilet Sewer

Toilet sewers are the drain pipes that usher waste away from your toilet and into external sewer mains. Toilet sewers are mounted in the floor beneath your toilet and are sealed to the bottom of the toilet by a combination of downward pressure and a wax ring. The ring expands to eliminate leaks and maintain the proper pressure. To install a toilet sewer pipe and flange, you will need some plumbing skills and a few basic plumbing tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Branch off the main sewer line and bring the pipe to your toilet location. Use your heavy-duty pipe-cutting machine to open your 3-inch vertical sewer main at a level beneath the flooring surface. The pipes leading from your toilet bottom to the main must have a sufficient downward slope. If you have a PVC sewer main, use a hacksaw to make the cuts.

    • 2

Install a 3-inch PVC T-junction with no overlapping fittings, and use two rubber boots with metal clamps to attach it to the main. Slide one rubber boot over the top end of the junction and the other over the bottom. Then slide both open ends onto the cut main. Use your screwdriver to tighten the T-junction to the main.

    • 3

Attach a double female adapter, then a piece of 3-inch PVC pipe to the open end of the T-junction, and use PVC cleaner and cement to fasten it in place. Clean the ends of the pipe inside and out by applying PVC cleaner. Once the cleaner has dried, apply cement to the outside of the pipe rim, then quickly slide it into one end of the adapter. Perform the same cleaning and gluing steps with the opposite end of the adapter and insert it into the open end of the T-junction. Use your hacksaw to cut the straight pipe so it ends directly beneath the toilet drain location.

Add another adapter, then a 90-degree elbow to the end of the straight pipe. Add a short length of straight pipe to get the sewer line a few inches above the flooring surface in your bathroom. Use a hacksaw to cut the sewer pipe off level and flush with the flooring surface.

    • 5

Slide the toilet mounting bolts through your toilet flange so the threaded end points upward. Fasten the bolts in position using your wrench and the nuts and washers provided by the manufacturer. Slide the flange down over the sewer pipe end, and use your PVC cleaner and cement process to fasten it in place.

Fasten the flange to the floor with your screw gun and the screws provided by the manufacturer. Install a new wax ring around the flange, and lower your toilet onto the bolts. Use your wrench or ratchet set to tighten the cap nuts, and press down on the toilet while installing to create a tight seal. Use your level to check that the flange is perfectly level. Use wooden shims to adjust if it is not.
