How to Reset a Fluidmaster Leak Guard

The Fluidmaster Leak Guard system uses an automatic locking mechansim to prevent costly bills due to tank water leaks. If the tank is leaking, the float won't drop until the toilet is flushed. This prevents the toilet from continuing to fill each time the water level in the tank drops without flushing. Over time, the leak guard chain stretches requiring some adjustment to operate properly. Resetting the Fluidmaster Leak Guard requires emptying the toilet tank of water.

  Lift the tank lid off the toilet and set it aside. Push the fill valve float under the water for 30 seconds. The fill valve begins to release water into the tank, but it will go down the overflow pipe. Release the float, and turn off the water supply valve behind the toilet.

  Flush the toilet, holding down the flush handle until the majority of the water is out of the tank. Release the flush handle. The fill valve float should be in the down position.

  Unhook the leak guard chain from the flush handle. The leak guard chain is the one that connects to the bottom of the float mechanism.

  Move the hook on the end of the chain down a couple of links. The hook unsnaps and snaps onto the chain. Reinstall the hook on the farthest left hole on the flush handle. The chain should be straight, but not tight.

  Turn on the water supply for the toilet. Flush the toilet and observe the operation of the fill valve. If the valve does not begin filling the tank with water, the chain is too tight and the hook needs to move up a link or two.

  Continue adjusting the leak guard chain as necessary. Put the tank lid on top of the tank, once adjustments are complete.
