How to Prevent Spray From a Sump Pump

A sump pump can help prevent water from accumulating on the floor of your basement, particularly during heavy rains or melting snow. It sits in a sump well, which accumulates water from under the foundation. As the well fills, the pump forces the water through a pipe to the exterior of the home. If the pipe connections are not tight, however, water may spray in your basement or outside your home when the sump pump runs.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the sump pump during operation to determine which PVC pipe connection is not secure.

    • 2

Unplug the sump pump. Pull apart the faulty PVC connection. Inspect the pipe and connector to ensure there is no damage. Dry the pipe and connector with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Apply PVC cleaner to the outside of the pipe and the inside of the connector with a 1-inch paintbrush. Allow the cleaner to dry for one hour.

    • 4

Apply PVC solvent to the portion of the pipe that fits into the connector, as well as to the inside of the connector with a 1-inch paintbrush. Fit the pipe end into the connector. Allow the solvent to bond for one hour.
