Can You Connect a PVC Pipe to a Polybutylene Pipe?

PVC pipe and polybutylene pipe are used in plumbing applications, such as water distribution systems in homes and businesses. Both pipes are lightweight and generally easy to install. Although connecting PVC pipe to polybutylene pipe is based on local building and plumbing codes, it’s not recommended for a number of reasons.
  1. Polybutylene Pipes

    • Polybutylene pipes, fittings and fixtures were widely manufactured between the late 1980s and mid-1990s for many plumbing applications. Polybutylene pipes and fittings were used in interior and underground water distribution systems, according to Plumbing Express. Polybutylene commonly failed because of its low tolerance to public water treatment chemicals, such as chlorine and fluoride, which made the pipes brittle and caused damage and leaks. The failure of polybutylene pipes and fittings resulted in lawsuits due to extensive water damage to homes and businesses.

    PVC Pipes

    • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely used in plumbing and water distribution applications. PVC pipes are resistant to public water treatment chemicals, as well as household chemicals. PVC pipe installation requires the use of specific primers, solvents and tapes to bond them correctly.

    Building and Plumbing Codes

    • Each jurisdiction’s building and plumbing codes vary, but many adhere to the American Society for Testing and Materials International’s standards. ASTM International is an organization that develops quality and safety codes for construction and home inspection. PVC pipe should not be connected with any other pipes, according to the Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association. Some jurisdictions and homeowners' insurance companies may require replacing polybutylene in home water distribution systems because of the material’s inability to withstand chemicals used in public water systems and standard household products.

    Conclusion

    • Connecting PVC pipe to polybutylene pipe is not a general practice in plumbing. Because polybutylene can fail easily, the best solution would be to replace polybutylene pipes and fittings with PVC or other recommended types. Some plumbing professionals specialize in the removal and replacement of polybutylene pipes. Associations, such as the American Society of Home Inspectors and the national Association of Home Inspectors, suggest the services of plumbers who specialize in the replacement of polybutylene pipes.
