DIY Overhead Shower

Overhead shower heads provide a rain-like shower experience, with the water falling down on you from directly above instead of angled at your face from the wall. If you wish to convert your existing shower to an overhead shower, you can do so yourself, without the need for a plumber. Overhead shower head replacements can be installed fairly easily, without need for many tools or plumbing experience, by simply replacing the shower head and not the whole shower enclosement. Be sure to shut off the water supply before proceeding.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old shower head. Clean the threads of the pipe protruding from the shower wall with steel wool.

    • 2

Apply Teflon tape to the pipe threads to ensure a snug, waterproof fit of the new overhead shower head.

    • 3

Attach the mounting hardware to the pipe protruding from the shower. This will vary depending on the manufacturer. Regardless, ensure the hardware is screwed onto the pipe tightly. Attach the extension pipe, if applicable, to the hardware. Use a wrench to tighten the extension pipe.

    • 4

Attach the overhead shower head by hand, and raise or lower it into the desired position. Tighten the wing nut to secure the overhead shower head in place. Do not use a wrench at this point; tighten only by hand to avoid damaging the overhead shower head.
