How to Hang a Pedestal Sink With Toggle Bolts

Although it's ideal to mount the pedestal sink to wall studs, it's often not possible, depending upon the sink's location. Mounting it to a wall between studs requires toggle bolts. Toggle bolts have folding wings that spring open inside the wall and provide anchor points. Hanging a pedestal sink with toggle bolts requires toggle bolts that are at least 3/16 inch in diameter. This helps to provide a more secure anchor behind the wall and support the back of the sink.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the sink pedestal into position. The pedestal should cover the sink's plumbing and drain lines. Once the pedestal is in position, place the sink onto the pedestal.

    • 2

Ask a friend to hold the sink basin while you position it correctly on the pedestal and against the wall. Place a level across the sink to ensure that it's aligned correctly. Ask your helper to hold the sink in place one you have it leveled.

    • 3

Reach under the sink and mark the mounting holes onto the wall with a pencil. Depending on the model and manufacturer, the sink might have two mounting holes molded on a rear flange, or it may have a hangar bracket that mounts below the rear lip on the sink basin.

    • 4

Remove the sink basin and set it aside. Move the pedestal out of the way. Drill holes into the wall with a drill bit the same size as the folded wings of a 3/16-inch toggle bolt.

    • 5

Unscrew the toggle wing from the bolt, if your sink uses a mounting bracket. Insert the bolt through the bracket's mounting hole and thread the toggle wing back onto the end of the bolt. Repeat for the second mounting hole. Fold the toggle wings together and insert them into the wall's pilot holes until the wings spring open. Tighten the bolts with a socket wrench until the bracket is snug against the wall.

Place the pedestal and sink back into position, if your sink doesn't use a mounting bracket. Align the sink's mounting holes with the wall's pilot holes. Take the toggle wings off the bolts and place a flat washer over the bolt. Thread the toggle wing onto the threads until the back of the wing is just below the end of the bolt.

Fold the toggle wing with your fingers and insert the toggle into the sink mounting hole until the wing springs open inside the wall. Repeat for the opposite mounting hole. Tighten the bolt with a socket wrench until the flat washer is snug against the sink flange. Do not overtighten as this can cause the sink to crack.
