How to Create Water Pressure in Plumbing

Water pressure in plumbing systems depends on the weight and height of the water supply. Almost all municipal water systems are dependent on gravity to create this pressure. However, it's possible to change the amount of water pressure that's allowed into your home plumbing. This is done by adjusting the water-pressure regulator. The regulator is the gatekeeper for your plumbing system, and determines the inherent water pressure set by the utility provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Go into the basement, crawl space or plumbing access panel, where your pressure regulator is located. The brass regulator is shaped like a cone and sits along the main water line.

    • 2

Turn the nut on the base of the regulator counterclockwise about four rotations. This will loosen the adjustment screw above the nut.

    • 3

Turn the screw clockwise with a screwdriver to increase the amount of water pressure in your home. The regulator is usually set at about 60 psi, but can be increased to about 90 psi. Check the pressure at a faucet or shower head each time you make a small adjustment in the regulator, and stop adjusting when you've reached your desired pressure setting.

    • 4

Turn the nut on the regulator clockwise until tight. This will lock the new pressure setting in place.
