How to Replace Sump Pump Oil

If you notice a strange smell or smoke coming from your sump pump, the problem could be with the oil inside. In order to work properly, these fixtures require oil to lubricate the moving parts inside. It's important to replace the sump pump oil according to manufacturer's instructions to keep the pump working at its best.

  • Sump pump oil

Instructions

      Turn off the sump pump at the main circuit breaker or unplug it from the wall.

      Remove the lid from the sump opening, if in place. Set aside.

      Bail out any water, if needed, so that you can reach the sump pump body.

      Locate the sump pump oil drain on your sump pump model. The location of this will vary from model to model.

      Hold the container underneath the sump pump oil drain screw or bolt. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the sump oil covering.

      Catch the oil that drains out with a small container. Tighten the drain screw or bolt.

      Locate the sump oil chamber cover. These are typically placed on the opposite side of the sump pump from the drain. Loosen the cover screw or bolt and remove.

      Add the appropriate oil type to the sump. Replace the container bolt or screw.

      Restore power to the pump.
