How to Remove a Sunken Bathtub

Although a sunken bathtub or Jacuzzi may make your bathroom look fancy, sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth. Sunken bathtubs are prone to cracks and leaks, and can cause problems with the floor supports underneath the tub. Thankfully removing a sunken bathtub is no harder than removing a regular tub – the only difference being that it must be lifted out of the floor, instead of just being pulled out of place. Because of this, removing a sunken tub is a job for at least two people.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water to the bathroom.

    • 2

Hold the razor blade carefully between the lip of the tub and the floor and scrape out any caulking holding the tub in place. Also remove any caulking where the tub meets the tile or plastic tub surround.

    • 3

Chisel free or hammer out the tiles, plastic tub surround or drywall within 36 inches of the bathtub in order to give yourself room to work the tub free. If you are planning on reusing the tiles, remove them carefully and set them safely outside of the room, otherwise, rip them out of the floor to clear out the necessary space.

    • 4

Remove the tub spout, fixtures and knobs by gripping them with channel lock pliers and turning counterclockwise. Pull them straight out of their locations and set them aside or discard them.

    • 5

Unhook the drain pipe by holding it with a drain wrench and turning it in a counterclockwise motion until it is loose.

    • 6

Unscrew the two screws holding the overflow cover in place below the tub spout. Remove the cover and set it aside or discard it.

    • 7

Hold the tub with both hands on the side opposite the fixtures. Have another person help by holding the other side of the tub. Pull the tub straight up and backwards until it is free of the floor. Cut the drain spout pipe with a hacksaw if it interferes with the removal of the tub.
