How to Adjust the Pressure on a Sloan Flushmate

The Sloan Flushmate increases the efficiency of compatible low-flow toilets. The unit uses a combination of water and air pressure to flush waste more forcefully down the drain. If your Flushmate-equipped toilet isn't performing as well as it used to, a bit of troubleshooting is in order. Although it's possible that a part has failed and needs replacement, these relatively simple devices are fairly durable. A minor adjustment might make all the difference.

  Locate the toilet water supply valve, typically near the base of the toilet. Open the valve fully and flush the toilet to check for a proper flush. If no improvement is observed, close the valve and flush the toilet again to relieve pressure on the unit.

  Remove the lid from the toilet tank and set it aside in a safe place. Pour a small amount of water onto the top of the flush cartridge, using a glass or cup. Turn on the water supply. Watch for a stream of bubbles from the cartridge indicating it requires replacement. No bubbles indicates a good cartridge.

  Place a nickel on top of the actuator button. Ensure that the coin will just slip beneath the flush rod, indicating the proper rod-to-actuator clearance of 1/8-inch. Obtain the proper clearance by loosening the actuator setscrew with a screwdriver, and adjusting the actuator up or down using the long handles of a pair of pliers. Tighten the setscrew and recheck the clearance.

  Flush the toilet to check for correct operation.
