How to Install Single-Handle Shower Controls

Modern showers often have a single handle to control the hot and cold water. The handle attaches to a single-control shower valve. The shower valve has separate lines branching off from each side that connect the hot and cold water. Installing a single-handle shower control is an easy process and should only take a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water at the main water supply valve. Turn on the water at the shower fixture to drain the water supply line.

    • 2

Wipe around the shower fixture and the wall with a clean, dry rag to remove any moisture. The area should be dry to properly install the single-handle shower control.

    • 3

Apply silicone sealant on the gasket on the backing plate. The gasket is on the back of the plate. The sealant will create a waterproof seal.

    • 4

Attach the plate to the shower wall, around the shower valve. The plate has a hole in the center and the shower valve will be in the center of the hole. Press the plate firmly to the shower wall to allow the sealant to stick.

    • 5

Insert the long screws through the screw holes on the plate attached to the shower wall. The manufacturer of the single-handle shower control typically includes the screws with the assembly. Screw in each screw using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 6

Put the stem adapter over the valve. The stem adapter attaches to the valve and controls the shower handle.

    • 7

Attach the faceplate to the plate on the shower wall.

    • 8

Fit the shower handle onto the stem adapter. Use a cotton rag to screw on the handle, so you don’t scratch the surface of the faceplate or handle.

    • 9

Turn the water on at the main water supply.
