What Kind of Pipes Don't Need to Be Soldered?

Metal plumbing pipes such as copper and galvanized steel are often bonded by soldering. You solder a joint by melting a filler material that joins the two pieces and hardens, sealing the joint. Plastic pipes, such as PVC pipe or cPVC pipe, common in residential household plumbing, do not connect by soldering. Plumbers use other methods to join plastic pipes to plastic pipes or plastic pipes to metal pipes.
  1. Make Cuts

    • Rather than making connections by soldering, you often join plastic pipes by using a solvent cement to bond the joints. To make the proper cuts for a secure connection, you need a fine-tooth saw and a holder made out of 2-by-4s to keep the pipe steady as you make the cuts. A saw with a 3- or 4-inch-wide blade gives best results, according to the Family Handyman website. Scrape away any shavings that remain on the pipe before applying the solvent.

    Apply Solvent

    • It's not enough to simply put some solvent on the pieces you're joining and press them together. You must make sure both surfaces have an even layer of solvent. Use a primer before applying any solvent. Placing an smooth layer of solvent on the mating surfaces of both pieces ensures a strong bond. After you have joined the pieces, hold them tightly together for about 15 seconds to allow the solvent to set.

    Join Fittings

    • Connecting plastic pipes sometimes involves using fittings. A fitting, or coupling, is a small piece of pipe that connects two larger pieces. You can find a wide variety of these types of connections at a plumbing supply store. When making these kinds of connections it's typically a good idea to dry-fit the pieces first, then add the solvent later. Don't jam pipes into fittings when using this method, as pieces can easily become stuck.

    Transitions

    • When connecting plastic pipes to metal pipes, such as connecting a copper pipe to PVC pipe, soldering is not required since you can use special transition couplings. Local hardware store or home improvement centers usually carry a small selection of these connectors. You must make sure that the connector works for the specific types of pipe you need to join. You should find this information on the label, or you can ask your local plumbing supplier.
