How to Remove Union Galvanized Pipe Nipples

In plumbing systems, unions are fittings that have removable nuts on either side. These fittings connect two sections of pipes or pipe nipples and allow you to remove either side quickly without cutting or torches. Galvanized pipe nipples are among the simplest to install or remove with unions as the pipe threads directly onto the union nut. Removing the nipple is a matter of loosening the nut enough to pull the pipe out of the fitting.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the main water valve by turning the ball valve 90 degrees to the right.

    • 2

Locate the pipe nipple that you want to remove and trace it back to the union. The union is short and has two large nuts on either side.

    • 3

Place a pair of channel-lock pliers around the nut that's closest to the pipe nipple that you want to remove.

    • 4

Turn the nut counterclockwise. If the nut will not turn, apply WD-40 lubricant to the area just above the nut. This will loosen any rust or corrosion that has accumulated.

    • 5

Rotate the nut counterclockwise as far as it will go. Eventually, the end of the pipe nipple will be fully exposed. At this point, you can pull the pipe nipple out of the union or inspect the fitting for signs of damage or corrosion. Water will likely spill out of the pipe as it's removed, so it's a good idea to have a rag on hand to mop up any spills.
