Noise in a Sump Pump Check Valve

Sump pumps are used to collect rain water that may accumulate in building basements. The pump is usually in a sump pit, which the water flows down into. The pump draws water out of the pit and pumps it either directly to the ground outside or more commonly into the sewer line. The check valve functions to prevent water from backwashing into the sump pit. In setups where the pump drains to the sewer line, it also prevents sewage from backing up into the sump pit. The opening and closing can cause noisy sounds in the pipes that can be muffled.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the sump pump check valve. The check valve is often hard plastic or metal with two PVC pipes running out of it. It is generally on the top of the pump.

    • 2

Cut lengths of foam pipe insulation with a utility knife. Cut a slit down the length of each foam insulation piece.

    • 3

Wrap the foam around the pipes going in and out of the check valve. For ideal results make sure that the entire length of the PVC pipes is insulated.

    • 4

Place duct tape strips across the slit in the foam insulation to secure it. If the foam slides around, wrap a few strips of duct tape tightly around the circumference of the pipes at both ends.
