Directions for Installing Kohler Flappers

Kohler toilets come with a standard flapper that operates from a chain. The chain mounts on the end of the flush handle. Over time the flapper develops cracks or attracts excessive grime that prevents it from sealing the flush hole. This makes your toilet run more often to fill the tank when water leaks down the flush drain. This requires replacing the flapper with a new one. When installing a new Kohler flapper, it is a good idea to clean the area that the flapper seals over to ensure a tight seal.

Instructions

    • 1

Take off the toilet tank lid and set it on a flat surface out of the way. Rotate the shut-off valve handle behind the toilet clockwise to turn off the water supply to the toilet tank. Flush the toilet and hold the flush handle down until nearly all of the water is out of the tank.

    • 2

Unhook the flapper chain from the existing flapper. The hook usually has one side that pivots to open the hook and remove it from the flapper.

    • 3

Pull the ears of the flapper off the pegs on the side of the flush tube. Wipe the top of the flush hole with a rag to remove any grime or sediment buildup.

    • 4

Place the new flapper over the flush hole. Push the ears over the pegs on the tube. Hook the end of the chain onto the loop on the front of the flapper.

    • 5

Turn the shut-off valve handle counterclockwise and allow the toilet tank to fill with water. Once the tank is full, flush the toilet to ensure the flapper seals correctly. Place the toilet tank lid back on the tank.
