Sink drains come in two types of design: an S trap for floor or vertical drains, or a P trap for horizontal drains. If you aren’t sure which kind your new black granite sink requires, ask you plumber to take a look and make a recommendation based on the location of the sink and the other pipes in your bathroom or kitchen.
You also need to know whether your new sink has an overflow outlet. This is the little hole at the top of some sink basins. Sometimes it is just under the faucet and sometimes it is on the outermost edge of the sink, closest to the edge of the countertop. If your sink does have an overflow outlet, you’ll need a drain that has overflow holes.
If you like using a traditional rubber stopper to plug your drain, plain chain and stopper drains are the way to go. If you want to be able to close and open the drain without having to keep track of or clean a rubber stopper, pop-up drains and lift-and-turn drains may work well for you. With pop-up drains, you press a knob at the top of the faucet that pushes a lever to open and close the drain. A lift-and-turn drain is one that opens when you lift a knob in the center of the drain itself and rotate it about 90 degrees left or right. Both stopper and lift-and-turn drains require you to get your hands wet to open a full sink, while a pop-up drain can be opened without touching the drain itself.
Black granite is a versatile color and material choice that looks good with just about any drain. All the drain types mentioned above come in brass or chrome, giving you the choice of a gold-colored finish or a silver one. Both of these are durable and easy to clean with everyday bathroom cleaners. However, if you want a more unusual look, some drains are also available with ceramic knobs, artistic drain hole designs and other features.
