What Is the Difference Between Using a PVC Elbow & a Rubber Elbow for Plumbing?

PVC Elbow

• PVC is a plastic material made from a vinyl base; it is used often in plumbing projects, especially outdoor projects involving irrigation and swimming pools. It is resistant to weathering and temperature changes, making it easy to work with. PVC components are made in many shapes, sizes and colors for multiple projects.

Uses

• PVC elbows are useful for plumbing work that is meant to last. They easily resist the moisture found in soil, which makes them especially ideal for irrigation work. You need to use sealing putty to properly seal the ends of the elbow joint, but when used correctly it can last for years without needing further work.

Rubber Elbow

• A rubber elbow is made from flexible rubber products. It is designed to fit the same types of pipes as PVC elbows and often is used alongside PVC. Typically, such fittings are used for condensate drains in furnaces and other side projects where a minor plumbing system is required. They may not be bonded and sealed like PVC elbows are.

Uses

• Rubber elbows do not last as long as PVC, but they have their own uses. Sometimes you can run into a situation where there is not enough room for a PVC elbow joint. In this case, a more flexible rubber joint can act as a stand-in. Rubber joints can also be taken on and off easily, making them useful for temporary projects and plumbing lines that need frequent changes.
