Can You Use Cement for Plumbing on a Conduit?

Cements

• Most types of plumbing can be joined with solvent cements, with the exception of polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene pipe. Solvent cements come in a several varieties with different features. However, the most important features that a decent plumbing cement will have include its consistency and how fast it sets. Cements that are too runny will not take hold fast enough nor will they properly adhere to the pipe in the first place. Cements need to have a medium to thick consistency and be fairly quick drying.

Joining

• Joining PVC and other types of plumbing using solvent cements involves the use of a fitting socket. The pipe slides into the socket, which is tapered on the inside to fit snugly against the pipe. The end of the pipe and the inside of the socket are covered with the solvent cement, which joins both pieces permanently. A primer is also applied to the pipe and socket beforehand as well. The pipe and socket are joined together by way of a chemical fusion of the two.

Preparation

• Cement and PVC can be used in a variety of plumbing applications, including conduits. Regardless of the application you use it for, you have to make the proper preparations before doing so. This includes cutting the pipe so that it fits squarely into the connecting socket. It also involves cleaning and priming the pipe so that no debris prevents the cement from making a chemical bond with the pipe. You also need to ensure that you follow the manufacturer's recommendation to ensure that you use the proper cement with the right type of pipe.

Safety

• Cement solvents are generally flammable and need to be handled with care. Always ensure that you keep the product tightly sealed in the container provided by the manufacturer until the time that you are ready to use it. It should be stored in a location away from any open flames or ignition sources. These cements are also irritants that can cause damage to the skin and eyes. The fumes from these solvents can also affect the respiratory system, so it is advisable to use some type of ventilation mask.
