How to Fix an Old Toilet Tank on the Wall With a Separate Bowl

Old toilets, while well made, can come with their fair share of problems. With constant use, the porcelain eventually weakens and cracks and everything from the flusher to the regulator must be changed out regularly. Two-part toilets with the tank on the wall are not difficult to troubleshoot and repair as needed.

Listen for sounds of water constantly running. If you hear this sound, it means the flusher valve is no longer sealing and must be replaced. Turn off the water to the toilet. Remove the top of the tank and unchain the old flusher from the handle’s chain. Take the old flusher to the hardware store and get the same size. Chain the new flusher valve and set it in place. This can all be done by hand.

Look for water between the bowl and the tank. If you see any, then the connecting pipes or their sealing rings are leaking. Turn off the water and drain the tank. Use a wrench to remove the pipes and inspect for cracks and holes. Replace the damaged parts and caulk around the exterior of everything.

Check your bill for excessive water use. If your old toilet tank still guzzles 10 gallons per flush, turn off the water to the toilet and remove the entire internal flushing apparatus in the tank. Take it to your local hardware store and purchase a conversion kit that will fit your tank. Install the conversion kit and enjoy the savings.
