How to Remove a Shallow Well Pump

A shallow well pump connects to the above-ground plumbing and motor, since the job of this type of pump does not require moving water over a great distance. Shallow well pumps are typically designed to draw water no deeper than 25 feet. The pump connects to a drive motor and two pipes for drawing and pumping well water. Over time, any pump can wear out and require repairs or replacement. Removing the pump usually takes no more than an hour, using basic tools.

  Shut off the pump motor and turn off the electricity at the circuit breaker.

  Twist the knob clockwise on the pipe valve at each end of the pump housing to stop the flow of water through the system.

  Use a screwdriver or nut driver to take out the hardware holding the cover on the pump. Lift off the cover and set aside.

  Pull the clip off the end of the motor shaft where it attaches to the pump, using pliers. The clip holds the drive shaft in place on the pump.

  Twist the coupling counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench on each end of the pump to release the pipes.

  Unscrew and remove the bolts or screws holding the pump to the mounting plate, using either a screwdriver or nut driver, depending on the hardware.

  Lift the pump to remove it from the mounting plate.
