How to Discharge a Vacuum Breaker

Pressure vacuum breakers are most commonly used in sprinkler systems. Vacuum breakers prevent water that enters the sprinkler pipes from flowing back into the pipes that supply the house with water. This is an important safety feature of any irrigation system, as water that enters irrigation pipes is no longer potable under most municipal plumbing codes. Since water runs through these devices, it's important to discharge as much water as possible from the vacuum breaker prior to maintenance or winterization.

Shut off the water to the vacuum breaker by turning the two ball valves located on the side of the breaker 90 degrees clockwise.

    • 2

Place the jaws of adjustable pliers around the small drain screw located on the bottom of the vacuum breaker. The screw is made out of brass and is located directly under the body of the breaker.

Turn the drain screw counterclockwise until it pulls free from the body of the vacuum breaker. Allow all of the water inside the breaker to discharge from the body. The water should drip out for about two minutes.
