How to Clean a Plumbing Pressure Regulator

Water pressure regulators are installed in almost all homes. These bell-shaped devices regulate the amount of water pressure that is released from the main water supply line to the rest of the plumbing in your home. A regulator is made out of brass, which resists corrosion and is a generally durable material that many plumbing fixtures are made out of. However, brass may tarnish over time. It's possible to clean the regulator to restore its original brass shine.

Instructions

    • 1

Saturate a rag with a commercial brass polish or a mixture of 1 teaspoon salt in 1/2-cup vinegar.

    • 2

Rub the rag over the brass surface of the pressure regulator, soaking the surface with the cleaning solution. Make sure the solution covers all brass surfaces on the regulator.

    • 3

Allow the solution to sit for five minutes.

    • 4

Scrub the surface of the regulator vigorously with the rag until all signs of tarnish are removed.

    • 5

Dip a clean rag into a bucket of warm water and rub it over the regulator to remove the solution. Periodically dip the rag into the bucket to rinse it off. Continue cleaning the brass until all of the cleaning solution has been removed. Allow the regulator to air-dry.
