How to Disconnect & Move a Basement Utility Tub

Basement utility tubs come in single- or double-basin designs and are typically used to presoak clothing before washing and to clean up after dirty tasks. The utility tubs are similar to regular sinks but are usually constructed of durable materials, such as concrete, plastic resins or metal, to withstand staining. Most tubs feature two pairs of legs located on each side and plumbing connected underneath. You can disconnect and move most utility tubs yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the hot and cold water inlets and turn them off by rotating the valve handles clockwise. Turn the faucet handles to make sure the water is off.

    • 2

Look underneath the back lip of the utility tub to locate the couplings that connect the hot and cold water pipes to the faucet. Attach a pipe wrench to the connectors and loosen them to disconnect.

    • 3

Connect a pipe wrench to the upper coupling above the curved P-trap at the bottom of the sink drain. Turn it in a clockwise direction to loosen. Pull the P-trap down to disconnect the pipe.

    • 4

Inspect the utility tub's feet for any fasteners that may secure the tub to the basement slab. Attach the correct size socket to the bolt nuts and remove them using a ratchet.

    • 5

Grab each side of the utility tub and pick it straight up off of the floor bolts. A helper will be required for heavy or large tubs.

    • 6

Move the tub to the preferred location and set it down.
