How to Install a Toilet Drain Extension

Stop the water flow to the toilet by closing the water shutoff valve located on the wall behind it then flush the toilet to remove the excess water. Trace the tube from the valve to the back of the toilet and unscrew the coupler at the end with a wrench until it comes off.

Remove the toilet from the floor by taking out the two floor nuts with a wrench then picking it up off the floor.

Insert a rag into the center of the drain hole immediately to prevent sewer gases from entering the home.

Look at the top surface of the drain opening and scrape off the wax ring with a putty knife. The wax ring may also remain stuck to the underside of the toilet. Apply 2 to 3 tablespoons of mineral spirits to a rag and wipe the exterior perimeter of the drain opening to remove the excess wax residue.

Remove the screws from the old flange with a power drill but do not remove the flange. Draw small pencil lines on the flooring next to the location of each screw hole in the flange.

Turn the extender flange upside down and apply a 1/4-inch-wide bead of caulk around the perimeter of it. Turn the extender so the caulk faces downward and press it into place over the old flange.

Insert the new extender flange on top of the existing flange and turn it so that the screw holes align with the pencil marks on the floor.

Insert the provided 1 1/4-inch stainless-steel screws into each of the holes.

Wipe around the new extender with a rag to remove any caulk that oozed out then reinstall the toilet.
