How to Install Plumber's Putty in Showers

Plumber’s putty is a clay-like substance designed to create a seal around drain and faucet areas. This seal is water-tight. When you’re installing new plumbing fixtures in your shower, plumber’s putty is an important element in the process. Use the putty when installing a new shower head or shower drain collar.

Instructions

  1. Shower Head

    • 1

Remove the old shower head, unscrewing it, using pliers if necessary. Scrape away any old putty around the threads of the shower stem, if necessary.

    • 2

Roll the putty in between your hands until it begins to soften.

    • 3

Spread on the threads of the shower stem in a liberal amount, ensuring full coverage. Wipe away any excess putty and attach the new shower head.

    Shower Drain Collar

    • 4

Pry off the shower drain collar by sliding a putty knife under it and pushing upwards to break the seal with the old putty.

    • 5

Clean away any old plumber’s putty by scraping it free. Dry the area thoroughly and remove any debris from scraping the old putty.

    • 6

Roll a strip of plumber’s putty that’s approximately ½ inch thick and long enough to fit around the drain hole. Press it into place around the drain hole.

    • 7

Push the new drain collar in place over the putty until it begins to ooze from the sides. Wipe away the excess that oozes out.
