How to Install Toilet Wedges

A faint but noticeable rocking motion may occur between your toilet and the floor. Like the annoying bistro table that requires a book of matches to steady it, your toilet needs some sort of shim to fill the space between the floor and the toilet. A toilet wedge features an angled shape, allowing it to fill various size gaps. Proper installation of this wedge ensures an effective and long-term solution to a rocking toilet.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Rock the toilet gently back and forth to determine the low spot around the toilet's base. This lower area causes the toilet to wobble.

    • 2

Scrape any remaining caulking from the low area using a utility knife. Create a clean gap in which to insert the wedge.

    • 3

Direct the tip of the wedge into the low point. If the gap proves too small to insert the tip, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the two anchor bolts that secure the toilet base to the floor. Loosen the bolts just enough to allow for insertion of the wedge.

    • 4

Place a carpenter's level across the toilet seat. Continue to adjust the wedge in or out of the gap until the bubble inside the carpenter's level is centered. The centered bubble indicates an even surface.

    • 5

Tighten the anchor bolts equally to once again secure the toilet in place.

    • 6

Cut away the exposed portion of the wedge using the utility knife.

    • 7

Apply a clean line of caulking to seal the gap between the toilet base and floor. Use the corner of a rag to wipe away an excess.
