Repairing a Leaking Frameless Shower Door

Frameless shower doors are designed to block most water from leaking outside of the shower, but they are not designed to withstand a high volume of water like fixed glass panels. When you install a new frameless shower door, you must follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly to prevent leaks. Even properly-installed shower doors eventually may leak under certain conditions, including if the clear vinyl sweep seals on the base of the door wear out and become brittle.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the shower and note if the stream from the shower head hits the shower door, especially near where the door intersects the other panels or the floor. Reposition the shower head if the stream of water hits the door.

    • 2

Peel off any sweeps attached to the bottom of the door, both inside and outside the shower. Remove the leftover adhesive residue from the door using an anti-adhesive solution and a rag.

    • 3

Clean the glass thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and glass cleaner solution. The glass needs to be completely free of debris of any kind so the new sweeps adhere correctly.

    • 4

Measure the width of the door and cut new sweeps for both sides of the door with a utility knife. Peel off the backing paper from the sweeps’ adhesive strips. Press the adhesive strips to the very bottom edge of the shower door.
