How to Test a Shower Valve After Installing

The shower valve is located directly behind the handle that turns the water on in your shower. Sometimes that valve leaks. Causes of a leaky valve include worn out parts, faulty soldering of supply lines, or dirt and mildew buildup around the valve cartridge. Whether you are replacing or installing a new unit, you need to ensure that you have installed the valve correctly without any leaks. This task is not complicated.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the parts that you removed to get to the valve cartridge. Reinstall the parts in the order you removed them.

    • 2

Replace the shower knob sleeve and flange. Also replace the shower knob and the screw that holds it in place. Tighten the screw with a screwdriver. Do not install caulk around the knob sleeve until you have tested for leaks.

    • 3

Turn the shower knob to the “off” position if it isn't already. Turn the water supply back on at the water main.

    • 4

Turn the shower knob to the “on” position. It should work properly.

    • 5

Turn the shower knob back to the “off” position. Look for any leaks around the knob.

    • 6

Repeatedly turn the water off and on several times until you are convinced the valve does not leak. If it does not leak, apply a bead of caulk around the shower knob flange. If the valve does leak, you need to remove the parts you just replaced including the valve cartridge. Check that the cartridge snaps into place and does not catch on anything. Remove anything that may be interfering with the path and placement of the cartridge.

    • 7

Reinstall the parts including the valve cartridge, knob sleeve and flange. Also replace the knob and the screw that holds it in place.

    • 8

Repeat the process until there are no more leaks.
