Removing a Toilet That Is Cemented Into the Floor

A toilet that is cemented to the floor can be difficult, but by no means impossible, to remove. The first part of this process, disconnecting the tank, is the same as with other toilets. When it comes time to removal of the bowl, however, challenges may arise. With a little bit of effort, however, you can remove the cemented toilet and continue with the larger project, like replacing the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply for the toilet. Check behind where the toilet is set for a water supply knob sticking out of the floor or wall. They usually stick out about 3 to 4 inches and have a knob at the end. Rotate the knob all the way to the right.

    • 2

Remove the toilet tank lid. Press the handle to flush the toilet. Use a towel to mop up any water left in the tank.

    • 3

Loosen the nuts beneath the tank. There may be two to three of them, depending on the toilet model. Unscrew the water supply hose from the bottom of the tank.

    • 4

Lift the tank up and off the back of the toilet.

    • 5

Remove the plastic caps at the base of the bowl by prying them off with a screwdriver. Loosen the nuts beneath with a wrench.

    • 6

Insert the edge of a chisel between the bottom of the toilet and the floor. Gently tap at the chisel to drive it underneath the bottom edge of the toilet bowl. Work your way around the base of the bowl, tapping with the chisel until the bowl begins to come loose.

Use a pry bar or a rotary cutting tool on the cement at the base of the toilet on tough jobs. If you don't plan on reusing the toilet, use the pry bar to wedge up as much of the base as you can. If you're thinking about reusing the bowl, a rotary cutting tool with a mortar cutting blade can cut through hardened cement.
