How to Increase Water Pressure in Your Home When a Commode Is Flushed

All the plumbing fixtures inside your home are connected. This shared system means the water pressure that's inside your water lines is also shared among all the fixtures, including the toilets, faucets and showerheads. When you flush a toilet, for example, the amount of water pressure that's available to the rest of the home is reduced until the toilet stops filling. The only way to increase the amount of water pressure that's available to other devices while the toilet, or commode, is being flushed is to increase the overall water pressure in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the access panel to your plumbing or go into the basement or crawl space where the plumbing enters your home from the street.

    • 2

Find the water pressure regulator. The valve is a bell-shaped device that is often installed on the inlet pipe, next to the house valve on the main water line.

    • 3

Turn the nut on the regulator counterclockwise with pliers. This will release the pressure on the adjustment screw.

    • 4

Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase the water pressure. Turn the screw in small increments, testing the pressure at a faucet or showerhead each time you make an adjustment. Tighten the nut on the regulator once you have set the pressure at the desired level.
