How to Enclose a Sump Pump

A sump pump prevents a home's basement from flooding by pumping groundwater away from its foundations. While the sump pit that the pump sits in can be left open, enclosing the sump pump ensures that nothing falls into the pit and damages the pump. Enclosing the sump pump also hides it from view and gives the basement a neater appearance.

  • Stone paver that will fit in basin

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sump pit liner into the sump pit so that it is level with the basement floor. Fill the liner with several inches of gravel.

    • 2

Place a smooth stone paver over the gravel so that it is reasonably level. Lower the pump onto the paver, and make sure that it sits securely without rocking. Remove the pump and paver, and smooth out the gravel if the pump is not steady.

    • 3

Connect the check valve and PVC pipe to the sump pump. Make a hole in a nearby wall with a hole saw. Run the PVC pipe through this hole to outside the house.

    • 4

Mix some concrete in a wheelbarrow with a hoe. Spread the concrete around the sump pump liner with a trowel, and let it harden overnight.

    • 5

Connect the sump pump's power. Slip the check valve through the slot in the sump pump's cover. Gently lower the cover into place over the sump pump basin. Check that the cover is on tightly.
