How to Drill a Hole in a Kohler Sink

Drilling into a Kohler sink, regardless of its material, is significantly more difficult than drilling into wood or drywall. Standard drill bits that most people use on the aforementioned materials will not work for drilling into a sink. Instead, you’ll need to use a cobalt drill bit or masonry drill bit. The drilling process is split into two parts, with each part requiring a different sized bit. As long as you continuously douse the bit in cold water while drilling, you should not encounter any problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a small “X” on the sink with a pencil, indicating where you will begin drilling, if the Kohler sink is stainless steel. Insert a 1/4-inch cobalt drill bit into your drill. If the sink is porcelain, make an "X" on the sink with masking tape, then insert a 1/4-inch masonry drill bit. The masking tape enables the bit to grip the porcelain.

    • 2

Put on safety glasses. Press the drill bit against the marked “X.” Hold the drill straight; avoid pressing it against the sink at an angle.

    • 3

Begin drilling. You want to lean your weight slightly into the drill, but not so much that your force is pushing the drill bit into the sink.

    • 4

Stop drilling and remove the drill bit from the sink after 15 to 20 seconds. Rinse the drill bit with cold water for five to 10 seconds, then quickly rinse the newly made hole with cold water. Perfect Water Technologies explains that keeping the drill bit cool is necessary to prevent damaging the sink and overheating the drill. Begin drilling again after rinsing both the drill bit and the sink hole.

Switch to a 1/2-inch drill bit after you’ve drilled through the sink with the 1/4-inch bit. Place the 1/2-inch bit into the same hole as you drilled before to enlarge it. Cool down both the bit and sink with cold water every 15 to 20 seconds. Use a cobalt drill bit if you're drilling into a stainless steel sink or a masonry bit if you're drilling into porcelain.
