My Shower Faucet Won't Reach Threads

The shower faucet is connected to the water supply pipes behind the shower wall. The faucet connects to a cartridge in a valve to control the water temperature or to the water supply pipes. The showerhead simply connects to a male thread in the water supply line. If the faucet won’t reach the threads, there are several areas to check and things you can do to resolve the issue.
  1. Water Supply Lines

    • The water supply lines are typically installed and secured with a clamp and structure, such as a wood board. The clamp and board secures the lines so they don’t flex or bend slightly when installing shower fixtures. If the water supply lines aren’t installed properly behind the shower wall, the shower faucet won’t reach or connect to the threads because the pipes move.

    Shower Wall

    • If the shower wall isn’t installed properly, the shower faucet won’t reach the threads. Because the water supply lines are generally a permanent fixture, the shower wall installed as little as a ¼-inch further out than required can complicate connecting the shower faucet to the water supply line properly. Attempting to force the connection can break or crack new shower wall installation.

    Shower Wall Solution

    • To avoid costly renovations to the shower wall, there are several solutions to allow the shower faucet to reach the threads on the water supply line. If the faucet connects through a valve, many shower faucet manufacturers sell a shower faucet extender valve part, which extends the valve controls to reach the shower faucet. If the faucet connects directly to the water supply lines, an extender fitting can extend the water supply line to reach the shower faucet. Purchase an extender fitting that matches the size of the water supply pipes, the faucet and the male connection thread.
