How to Hook Sprinklers to a Well

Homes that use well water require the use of electric pumps to pull the water from the well and move it with sufficient pressure into the faucets, shower and other fixtures. Well pumps are also capable of supplying water to irrigation systems by branching the main water line to a sprinkler manifold. Connecting the well water to the sprinkler system is a matter of installing a T-fitting and connecting the pipe that supplies the manifold.

Hacksaw or pipe cutting tool
Compression T-fitting (such as Sharkbite)
Sprinkler manifold with connected supply pipe

Instructions

  Shut off the power to the well water pump, or turn the home's circuit breaker to the "off" position.

  Locate a section of the well water pipe that's nearest to the sprinkler manifold box.

  Make a mark on the pipe with a marker, and measure from that line to a point 4 inches away. Make a second mark at that point.

  Cut the pipe on both marks using a hacksaw or pipe cutter.

  Place one end of a compression T-fitting over one side of the exposed pipes. Press firmly on the fitting until it clicks into place.

  Gently pull back on the other side of the pipe and the fitting to slip the opening on the fitting into the other section of pipe. Allow the pipe and fitting to push into one another until the fitting clicks into the other pipe. The pipe is now reconnected with an opening available for a third pipe.

  Press a section of pipe that's connected to the sprinkler manifold intake valve into the third opening on the T-fitting you just installed. Push firmly until the pipe clicks into place. The manifold is now connected to the main water line. Turn the power to the well pump back to the "on" position, and turn on the sprinklers to test the connection.
