How to Add New Plumbing Drains By Tying Two Together

Tying two drains together is useful when you add a second sink. Duel drains use one central P-trap that's connected to both drains using a T-fitting. This T-fitting allows water to drain into either side of the sink and exit through a central pipe. This type of connection requires few tools, and can be installed on almost any combination of sink sizes and types. When completed, your two drains will be tied together and work in harmony.

Things You'll Need

  • P-trap (Most sinks require 1 1/2-inch fittings)
  • T-fitting

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the drain stub out under the sink. The stub out is where the drain funnels water to the waste pipe.

    • 2

Place the end of the straight pipe on a P-trap onto the end of the stub out. Tighten the nut around the pipe until the compression ring inside the pipe holds tightly. The "U" in the P-trap should be facing down, with the opening facing the ceiling.

    • 3

Place the top of a T-fitting onto the exposed end of the P-trap. Turn the nut on the T-fitting clockwise until tight. The T-fitting and P-trap are now connected.

    • 4

Place the straight end of two 90-degree elbows into either side of the T-fitting. Turn the nuts on the T-fitting clockwise until tight.

    • 5

Place the exposed ends of the 90-degree elbows onto the exposed stub of the sink drains. Turn the nuts on the drains clockwise to lock them into the drain system. The two sinks are now tied together.
