How to Adjust Points on a Deep Well Motor Switch

Pulling water from far underground, deep well motors employ a breaker point system to regulate ignition timing. Well pump motor breaker points require periodic cleaning and adjustment for efficient operation; failure to keep the points properly adjusted will result in motor damage, often causing motor failure if the points are neglected for extended periods. The procedure for adjusting ignition points on deep well motors is identical to the procedure for adjusting other small engines.

Instructions

    • 1

Release the distributor cap clips with your fingers and pull the cap off the distributor assembly with your hand.

    • 2

Pull the rotor, inside the distributor assembly, up with your hand until the rotor “snaps” into the extended position. Remove the breaker point assembly with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Insert the tip of the flat-head screwdriver between the breaker point arms and gently twist the screwdriver to spread the point arms apart. Insert an emery board between the point contacts and release the pressure on the spring arms with the screwdriver. With the emery board pinned between the contacts, work the emery board back and forth between the points 10 times, with your fingers.

    • 4

Pull the emery board from between the points, spread the point arms with the flat-head screwdriver and wipe the point contacts clean with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 5

Reference the correct point gap setting in a shop manual or contact the engine manufacturer or a repair shop. Insert the appropriate thickness feeler gauge between the point contacts. Adjust the points with a flat-head screwdriver until the contacts on the points rest evenly against the sides of the feeler gauge.

Reinstall the point assembly into the distributor with the Phillips screwdriver. Push the rotor back into place with your hand and reattach the distributor cap.
