How to Adjust Water Lines on an Oil Furnace

Water lines on an oil furnace deliver hot water to a building, typically for baseboard or wall radiator heating applications. Adjusting the lines involves setting the temperature control at the point where the lines connect to the furnace. You can expect energy savings of 3 to 5 percent for every 10-degree reduction in water temperature, according to the U.S. Department Of Energy. Always check the ratings printed on the furnace equipment for maximum safe temperatures before attempting any adjustments to the lines. The actual adjustment takes only seconds to do.

Instructions

Follow the path of the water pipes to the connection on the oil furnace, usually next to a water tank or coils.

    • 2

Read the recommended settings printed on the thermostat control where the water pipes connect to the equipment. If the printing has worn off, check the owner's manual for the furnace or contact the manufacturer.

Turn the thermostatic control for the pipes with a screwdriver to rotate the screw head. Twisting it clockwise increases the temperature to the setting listed on the thermostat. A counterclockwise rotation lowers the water temperature.
